About This Location

[Description] Byeolmaro Observatory, perched atop Bongnaesan Mountain in Yeongwol, is one of Korea’s premier public astronomical observatories. Its name is a beautiful compound of Korean words meaning "a quiet peak to gaze at stars." Established in 2001, it is strategically located at an altitude of 799.8 meters, where the low humidity and high number of clear days provide optimal conditions for stargazing. The observatory features a massive 80cm reflecting telescope in its main observation room, alongside several auxiliary telescopes for diverse celestial viewing. Beyond its scientific facilities, the observatory is a major cultural landmark famous for its "Astrophotography" spots and the Planetarium, which projects a realistic starry sky on a domed screen even on cloudy days. The summit offers a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view, where visitors can overlook the winding Donggang River and the twinkling lights of Yeongwol town below. Its stunning sunset and night views have made it a popular filming location for Korean movies and variety shows, attracting both romantic couples and families seeking an educational yet magical experience under the stars. [How to Get There] The observatory is located at a high altitude, so it is most accessible via a combination of intercity bus and local taxi. From Seoul Central City Terminal or Dong Seoul Terminal, take an intercity bus to Yeongwol. From the Yeongwol Intercity Bus Terminal, it is highly recommended to take a taxi (approximately a 15-20 minute drive) to the summit. While there is no direct city bus to the very top, the scenic mountain road is well-paved. During peak seasons, it is essential to check the reservation status on the official website before heading up, as observation programs often sell out in advance.
