About This Location

[Description] Hongje Yuyeon is a stunning underground art space located beneath the Yujin Sangga building in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. For 50 years, this 250-meter section of the Hongjecheon Stream was closed to the public as a structural support area for the building above. In 2020, it was reopened as a "public art corridor" where light, sound, and digital media installations breathe life into the dark, concrete pillars. The name "Hongje Yuyeon" means "meeting with art and healing at Hongjecheon." The space features 8 mesmerizing media art installations, including light shows reflected on the water's surface and interactive holograms that respond to human movement. Walking through this subterranean gallery, where the raw industrial concrete of the 1970s meets cutting-edge 21st-century light art, offers a surreal and immersive experience. It stands as a unique cultural landmark that demonstrates how abandoned urban infrastructure can be revitalized into a peaceful, artistic sanctuary for the community. [How to Get There] The space is highly accessible via the Seoul Metro. Take Line 3 to Hongje Station and use Exit 1. From the exit, walk straight for about 5 minutes toward the Yujin Sangga building. Once you reach the Hongjecheon Stream next to the building, follow the stairs down to the riverside walking path. The entrance to Hongje Yuyeon is located directly under the building's structure. Numerous city buses also stop at the "Yujin Sangga" or "Hongje Station" stations, which are just a short walk from the entrance to the stream path.
